Duration: 3 Year HLA with opportunities for 5 years and progression
Reports to: Senior Mechanical Estimator / Estimating Manager
The Mechanical Estimating HLA Student will support the estimating team in preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for mechanical engineering projects. The role provides hands-on experience in tendering, cost analysis, and project pricing, helping develop both technical and commercial skills within a live engineering environment.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
· Assist in preparing mechanical cost estimates and tender submissions.
· Review drawings, specifications, and tender documents to understand project requirements
· Support quantity take-offs for mechanical systems including:
- HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning)
- Pipework and plumbing systems
- Plant and equipment
· Help obtain and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations.
· Assist in preparing bill of quantities (BoQs) and pricing documents.
· Support the identification of risks, value engineering opportunities, and cost-saving options.
· Help compile tender submissions ensuring accuracy and adherence to deadlines.
· Maintain and update cost databases and estimating records.
· Liaise with design, engineering, and commercial teams to ensure accurate pricing assumptions.
· Assist in post-tender queries, clarifications, and handover to project teams.
Skills and Knowledge
· Basic understanding of mechanical engineering or building services systems.
· Strong numerical and analytical skills.
· Good IT skills, particularly Microsoft Excel.
· Ability to read and interpret technical drawings (desirable).
· Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
· Good communication and teamwork skills.
· Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Desirable Attributes
· Basic understanding of:
- HVAC and Mechanical systems
- Estimating software
· Previous experience (e.g., internship, part-time role or academic project)
· Interest in commercial and tendering aspects of engineering projects.
